WHALE WATCHING IN LA PAZ

The Sea of Cortez is one of five most diverse seas in the world and perhaps for this reason was baptized by Jacques Cousteau as ‘The Aquarium of the World’. Every year the gray whale makes its annual migration from the Chiriko Basin to Magdalena Bay where the whales give birth and nurse between the months of January to end of March.

You can go out on a motor boat in the breeding grounds and suddenly be surrounded by dozens of whales that approach your boat to check you up and to even let you pet them. Come and have a close encounter with these 100% Mexican giants.

SNORKEL & SCUBA IN LA PAZ

Have a great day snorkeling with playful sea lions or scuba dive with hammerhead sharks and giant mantas. Many La Paz dive companies offer daily trips for your convenience.
Some of the great places for scuba diving in La Paz are:

El Bajo: A submarine Mountain with deeps of at least 18 Meters.
Los Islotes: Marine Wolf colony that is ready to be seen by visitors.
Salvatierra: Offers an artificial reef of a boat that was sunken on 1976.
La Ánimas: Offers excellent scuba diving all year long and located in front of Dan Jose Island.
La Reina y La Reinita: Small islands located in front of Cerralvo Island

New Artificial Reefs: There are several Chinese boats sunken for this purpose that are an excellent option for this sport.

FISHING IN LA PAZ

Fishing in the waters of La Paz is a year-round activity, with great Tournaments and places for this sport. Species range from marlin to tuna to dorado.

SAILING IN LA PAZ

La Paz is one of Baja's best sailing ports and most popular. Many sailboats anchor in the bay to store up on supplies and information before heading for more remote parts of the Sea of Cortez coastline. La Paz has two main marinas: Marina La Paz and Marina Palmira.

WINDSURFING IN LA PAZ

From November to March, the Sea of Cortez is a windsurfer's paradise, particularly from the central coast southward. La Paz is no exception and offers your ideal wave to practice your favorite hobby.

KAYAKING IN LA PAZ

HERPETARIUM OF LA PAZ

See a unique reptile collection. Founded by Alan Black, this is where your can see species of reptiles that Inhabit the peninsula. Snakes, Iguanas, Lizards, Spiders and other species form part of the collection. The objective of these exhibits is to inform as well as to create an ecological consciousness among visitors with the aim of helping preserve the species.

SHOPPING IN LA PAZ

Shopping in La Paz should bring you bargains on arts and crafts that other more popular resorts sell at higher rates. You will also find art galleries. Most shopping for the tourist is along the malecon or within a few blocks of it. At Mercado Madero or the central market you'll find crafts, household goods and small food stalls.
La Paz has all the shopping necessities of a capital city and you will be able to find pharmacies, grocery stores, furniture and household goods, and much more.

What to see around the city of La Paz

CONSTITUCIÓN PLAZA OF LA PAZ

The city's main square (also called Velasco Garden) has been rebuilt and modernized since colonial days. On one side is the imposing Cathedral, built in 1861 by Dominican priests on the site of the city's original Jesuit mission. On the plaza's north side is the former Casa Municipal, now home to the Library of the Californias History.

REGIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY OF LA PAZ

The city's best museum is the Regional Anthropology and History Museum featuring displays focusing on the Baja peninsula's native inhabitants, ecology and geology. Most displays are in Spanish.

MALECON (PROMENADE) OF LA PAZ

La Paz city life revolves around the town's coastal promenade that lines Álvaro Obregón Walk. Much of the city's dining and nightlife is here. The promenade stretches for several kilometers past sandy beaches (some of which attract sunbathers and swimmers). Strollers, vendors, fisherman, and the city's friendly residents make the malecon a lively spot for people watching and taking in the beautiful sunset over the bay. The seaside Parque de la Amistad (Park of Friendship) with benches and a two story kiosk faces one of the several piers that extend into La Paz Bay.
